Annual flowers provide a refreshing burst of color and vibrancy any time of the year.  As their name suggests, annuals complete their life cycle within a year; they sprout, bloom, produce seeds, and die, all in a single growing season.  Annuals used in our landscapes are typically purchased in economical groups called “flats”, which are plastic bundles of small individual plants sold by stores in groups of 16 or 25.  With their diverse colors and textures, annuals are the perfect choice for brightening up flower beds, landscaped areas, planters, pots or any place they will fit.   

The lifespan of annual flowers can vary depending on the specific variety and growing conditions; most live 3-6 months before they either exhaust their vitality or the seasonal elements become too inhospitable.  Some kinds, like alyssum and marigolds, can reseed in the landscape, which creates an ongoing cycle of colorful blooms from year to year. 

In terms of care, consistent watering, fertile soil and regular fertilizing are critical tasks  for encouraging annual flowers to look and act their best. It is wise to water early in the morning to reduce evaporation and allow the plants to absorb moisture fully; however, please be aware that some annuals are thirsty plants and may require multiple waterings per hot summer day.  Mulching around the base of the plants can help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Be cautious not to overwater during the wintertime, as excessive moisture can lead to root rot and other issues. Adjusting the watering schedule based on weather conditions and the specific needs of each variety is vital to keep your annuals thriving throughout their prime season.  Fertilizing often with phosphorus-heavy plant food geared toward flower production will benefit most blooming annuals.
